Last week I may have photographed First Niagara Pavilion’s final Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival as we know it. Attendance was one third of what it was when I shot the festival back in 2012. The lineup was topped with Slayer and King Diamond, but lacked in providing much else as far as bands that would draw much of a crowd. Back in 2012 there were three stages with Anthrax headlining the 2nd stage, as Motörhead, Slayer and Slipknot were the big draws on the main stage. This year there were only two stages with the 2nd being a tiny popup stage that saw ten bands hit the stage, each one pretty much sounding like the last.
I think for Mayhem to survive, they are going to need to book a little more variety and bring back the bigger 2nd stage with a more popular headliner. If in fact there is a future for Mayhem, festival promoter Kevin Lynman will have to find other bands to book as headliners as Kerry King pretty much told MetalInjection.net that Slayer will never be coming back…
Here’s a few shots from throughout the day at Mayhem.
