I had an opportunity to photograph The Black Crowes at Pittsburgh’s Stage AE this week. The threat of thunderstorms as well as insane traffic due to a Pittsburgh Pirates home game didn’t stop a near-capacity crowd from showing up for this show. After missing the opening act, The London Souls – I got to see and shoot The Tedeschi Trucks Band as they prepped the crowd for what was to come. Susan, Derek and the other ten or so people on stage played a solid 1-1/2 hour set. A little drizzle here and there didn’t slow anything down.
The Black Crowes started on time and didn’t finish until about two minutes to curfew. The lighting was a little difficult at first, as they brought blue LED lighting along with some blue LED lighting… And just a little bit of – yep, you guessed it – blue LED lighting. So what’s a guy to do? Crank up the white balance to about 10,000k and try not to let shutter speeds drop below 1/160th. This helps to keep everyone on stage from looking like a Smurf. Most of the images were shot at 1/200th and ISO’s ranged from 1000 to 2500.
Below are the 15 best from the first two songs (which was all they permitted) Click on the first one and use your arrow keys to see the rest.
Thanks for stopping by… Check back in the next day or so to see the shots from The Tedeschi Trucks Band….
